What Is Body Doubling? A Beginner's Guide

Sheida ·

Body doubling is a focus strategy where you work on a task while another person is present, either in the same room or online. Your body double does not need to help, supervise, or even work on the same thing. They might be reading while you study, answering emails while you write, or quietly working alongside you on a video call. The idea is simple: having someone else there can make it easier to begin a task and stay with it.

Body doubling is often discussed in ADHD communities, particularly as a way to approach tasks that feel difficult to start or finish. Some people find that another person’s presence creates gentle accountability and makes working feel less isolating. It is not a guaranteed solution, though, and research directly testing its effectiveness remains limited. Think of it as a practical strategy to try, not a proven treatment or a replacement for professional support.

Getting started does not require a special setup. Ask a friend to work quietly beside you, arrange a virtual coworking session, or sit in a library where other people are studying. Before you begin, choose one specific task and agree on a period of uninterrupted work. You can briefly share your goals if that helps, but conversation is optional. The point is to create a supportive environment, not another meeting.

If you prefer a little more structure, combine body doubling with a focus timer. FocusCrew lets you choose 5-, 25-, 50-, or 75-minute sessions and work alongside a small crew of three or four people. Everyone focuses on their own task without needing to talk. A short session can make a daunting task feel easier to approach, while a longer one gives you room to settle into deeper work.

The best way to find out whether body doubling suits you is to try one low-pressure session. Pick a task you have been putting off, work alongside someone for 25 minutes, and notice whether starting or staying focused feels easier. If the company becomes distracting, change the setting or try a different partner. Body doubling does not have to work for everyone to be a useful addition to your routine.
